Standard Chartered has launched a cryptocurrency trading service that lets eligible affluent clients in the United Arab Emirates buy and sell Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) through their existing bank accounts. The bank said the service received licensing approval from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) and is initially available to Professional Investor clients in the UAE.
The launch brings two major digital assets into an existing wealth-banking relationship. Clients will not need to set up a separate crypto wallet or use a third-party trading platform for this specific service; Standard Chartered says custody and settlement are managed within its own closed-loop ecosystem.
How the service works
The bank says the offering combines its Wealth and Retail Banking and Corporate and Investment Banking businesses with support from Zodia Markets, which is backed by SC Ventures. It brings together trading access, liquidity, custody and settlement within a single service arrangement.
The closed-loop structure is intended to reduce clients’ exposure to external wallet and platform risks, although it does not remove market risk or make cryptocurrency prices stable. Bitcoin and Ether can experience sharp price swings, and custody, operational, regulatory and counterparty risks still need to be considered.
The bank describes the service as a global first for its affluent wealth offering and as the first cryptocurrency trading service of this kind from an international bank in the UAE. Those “first” descriptions are the bank’s own claims, rather than an independently audited ranking of every financial institution worldwide.
What Standard Chartered said
Rola Abu Manneh, Standard Chartered’s CEO for the UAE, Middle East and Pakistan, said the launch reflects the country’s role in the bank’s global wealth network and its regulatory approach to digital assets. The bank’s announcement identifies the UAE as one of its four global wealth hubs.

Who can use it?
The service is not described as a general retail offering for every UAE bank customer. Standard Chartered says it will first be made available to eligible Professional Investor clients in the UAE. The bank plans to expand to other markets over time, but the announcement does not provide a timetable for those future launches.
That distinction matters: the announcement is about access for an eligible wealth-client segment, not the addition of Bitcoin and Ether trading to every account or banking app across the region.
Why the announcement matters for Bitcoin and Ether
The launch is another example of traditional financial institutions building regulated pathways to digital-asset markets. Offering BTC and ETH inside a familiar banking relationship may appeal to clients who prefer an integrated custody and trading arrangement instead of managing separate exchange accounts and wallets.
However, a new access channel does not automatically mean that large sums will flow into either asset or that prices will rise. The bank has not published client adoption or trading-volume figures with this launch announcement. Actual usage, product terms, costs and the service’s future geographic expansion will be more informative indicators over time.
Standard Chartered already offers eligible clients other forms of crypto exposure, including cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds, structured products and over-the-counter derivatives. The new UAE service adds direct Bitcoin and Ether trading to that wider digital-asset offering.
