Bank of New York Mellon (BNY) and Citadel Securities have completed a triparty repurchase-agreement workflow using a tokenized representation of a two-year U.S. Treasury note. According to BNY and reporting by The Block, the tokenized security was recorded on BNY’s private digital ledger and settled within minutes before being used as collateral in an overnight repo.

How the transaction worked

BNY said the Treasury note was purchased through Tradeweb, represented as a tokenized security on its private ledger, and then used by Citadel Securities as collateral in an overnight triparty repo. In a repo, a party obtains cash against securities with an agreement to reverse the transaction later. The workflow links trade execution, settlement and short-term financing.

BNY described this as the first use of tokenized assets on a major triparty repo platform. The characterization is attributed to the bank and should be understood within the scope of the platform and workflow it described.

Why tokenization could matter

Tokenized securities are digital representations of financial assets recorded on a ledger. In institutional markets, potential benefits include faster transfers, more continuous settlement operations and improved movement of collateral. The transaction is notable because it applies tokenization to an existing financial workflow rather than to a new speculative token alone.

What this does not prove

One transaction does not demonstrate that all Treasury settlement will become instant or that public blockchains were used. BNY said the tokenized note was recorded on its private ledger. Operational resilience, legal enforceability, interoperability, controls and adoption at scale remain important questions.
